eBay is increasingly becoming a haven for fraudsters, and eBay's rules don't seem to catch them.
I was perusing eBay the other day, looking at the resale value on iPads, as the news is reporting that sales of iPads are down. What was interesting is that a number of the devices are offered for sale for mere pennies, because they are "locked" due to "problem with AppleID" which means either they are stolen, or perhaps they somehow are locked to a particular user's ID and cannot be unlocked. Probably stolen. Probably a good idea to avoid those.
But it was interesting how even "unlocked" devices are selling for fairly low prices. But many of the sellers are offering multiple devices, while having very little in the way of feedback. Probably a good idea to avoid a seller with a 100 feedback, who has over 100 items currently for sale.
Then I saw this power-seller. He has a feedback rating of over 30,000! Has to be a reliable guy, right?
Maybe. The problem is, if you read the actual feedback you realize there are a lot of negative comments, very recent ones, where the seller was said to have sent the wrong merchandise, broken merchandise, or just was misleading. And the seller never responded to any of those negative comments.
And then you read the positive feedback, and it goes on for pages and pages - all for the same product (a "screen protector" sold for mere pennies) being bought by the same buyers, one at a time, in a dozen transactions at a time - or more:

Well, you get the idea.... There are pages more I could upload here. Well, except that once you get past page 70 on the eBay feedback system, you get an error "feedback not available". You can see the last page, 221, however.
What is going on here? Is someone really buying dozens of screen savers for a penny each as individual transactions and then leaving the same number of positive feedbacks? Perhaps. The reality is, of course, that these hundreds - if not thousands - of positive feedbacks tend to dampen out the mere hundreds of negatives. eBay is not helping buyers with a feedback system like this!
Note also that you can get feedback as a buyer, too, and there are some feedbacks that look suspicious there as well - the same feedback from the same seller for multiple items. Two eBay "power sellers" could just make penny transactions between one another and just jack their ratings through the roof this way.
What is more alarming is the overall feedback pattern:

While the seller is listed as having an eBay account since 2003, an astounding 24,504 of the 33,757 transactions are in the last 12 months alone. And if you page through the feedback listings, most of these are for these 6-cent "screen savers" whose feedback counts the same as a $200 smart phone transaction.
Meanwhile, the nearly 1,000 negative transactions are drowned out by hundreds, if not thousands of penny-transactions for screen savers.
Since the feedback is so skewed by these penny-transactions, the "detailed feedback" gives the impression that everything is just fine:

As you might imagine, it would not be hard to set up multiple e-bay accounts using the names of relatives and friends (or even made-up names) and then make these multiple penny-transactions using a disposable credit card.
But even assuming that isn't the case here, if you filter out all the penny-transactions for screen savers, you see that the ratio of negative feedback to positive feedback is much higher than you might think. And these are for transactions that cost $100 or more, and thus are more important. Moreover, most of these negatives are in the last 12 months.
And in every case, it seems, the seller never responded to negative feedback. I won't be buying anything from this seller, that's for sure! You see, on eBay, it is possible to pay for an item and never receive it and have no recourse, or find out an item is fraudulent and have no recourse.
Now think about this for a minute. If you went to a car dealer and bought a car, and they didn't deliver it to you, and when you went back, they said, "Well, we're going to keep your money and keep the car, and you can go to hell!" how long would they stay in business?
Even if it was just a hamburger stand. "Thanks for your money, but we're not going to give you the product you ordered!" - that simply would not fly. But for some reason, on eBay, this is allowed.
Could you imagine if Amazon worked this way? "Welcome to Amazon, where the odds of getting what you paid for are, well, 50/50!"
eBay says they try to police things, but their "feedback" system is broken. Perhaps the feedback ratings, particularly the "Stars" should be based in part on the cost of the item being sold. I have sold cars on eBay, which cost thousands of dollars. The feedback "stars" value for a car transaction is equal to that of a penny transaction for a screen-saver.
By the way, how do they make money selling those for a penny? With free shipping no less?
Similarly, multiple transactions for the same item from the same seller to the same buyer on the same day, should not be counted as separate feedback transactions.
If the feedback system was modified to amplify feedback based on the cost of the item, then 100 of these penny transactions would not make a dent in the overall feedback rating - and a $100 or $1000 transaction would make a more powerful statement. Similarly, multiple transactions for the same buyer and same seller on the same day should count as one transaction and count as one feedback.
But eBay isn't going to change the feedback system, except to favor power-sellers even more. The system already has been "anonymized" to protect sellers, and the "star system" makes it appear that a seller's performance is much better than it is.
Look at the data above. In raw form, you might believe that out of 30,000+ transactions, only a few hundred people were unhappy. But if you remove all the penny-transactions for screen-savers, the ratio shoots up dramatically - perhaps to as many as half. It is hard to tell, as we can't, as observers, even count all these transactions without spending days doing so.
Simply put, the whole damn eBay system is broken. It no longer is "America's Garage Sale" but instead a legitimate version of Silk Road, where sketchy "power sellers" can skew their ratings and ship bad merchandise with little or no consequence.
I find I am using eBay less and less and Amazon more and more. I have yet to have a bad transaction on Amazon, period.
