People all over are pretty much the same, despite what you may hear.
For some reason, the video above appeared on my YouTube feed. It was interesting to watch, as the fellow lived in an integrated neighborhood in Washington, DC in the 1950's and drove a cab. He had no truck with black folks, and counted them as his friends and neighbors. He sounds like a pretty decent guy, who just wants to work hard and support his family.
Maybe he is a real jerk in person. I kind of doubt it, though. But I think it illustrates what I have learned over the years, travelling the country by RV. Yea, there are a few jerks out there - they get all the headlines. But most people are pretty middle-of-the-road and decent folks who just want to be left alone, given a job to do and a chance to succeed. They aren't interested in far-right or far-left politics.
I am hopeful that these folks will win out in the end, and drown out the loud voices on either extreme, with their silence - and their vote. Spiro Agnew talked about the "silent majority" of Americans, who didn't protest and make loud speeches. And while Spiro Agnew was wrong about a lot of things, I think he was on to something - there are a lot of people who keep their opinions to themselves, and are decent, caring people who don't want to rock the boat one way or another.
I think here in Georgia we saw those folks on January 7th, when we elected two Democratic Senators to the US Congress. People saw the debacle of the day before and said, "enough is enough!" - they could tolerate only so much bullshit, but when a President tries to take over the country, they are willing to risk a little socialism which can be readily reversed later on, if necessary.
Hopefully, in view of recent events, these same people will vote in November - and think carefully about where they want their country to go. Because there are many people on the ballot who still profess to believe in the Big Lie and are not afraid to take over the government by force.
The only question is, if they do that, then what?
