The "Free" credit report they advertise on TeeVee really isn't free - it is just a come-on to sell you Credit Protector services.
The REAL free site is: www.annualcreditreport.com
Under the LAW you are entitled to one FREE copy of your credit report every year. I usually run mine at the end of the year, as there is not much to do on the Holidays, anyway.
It is not a bad idea to run this, even if you don't need to borrow money. You can check to see if someone has tried to open an account in your name, or if there is erroneous information reported on your record.
Being debt-free, on the other hand, means you need no credit report. But it is free, so why not run it?

Thanks. I only wished I could have read what I have written here, when I was 21 and cashing in my 401(k) from General Motors to buy a motorcycle.
